As a parent you have a number of options when considering childcare depending the age of your child and the type of childcare you would prefer. Depending on the area you live or work will depend on the availability of certain types of care.
In considering the childcare you want for your child there are two types – Group or Home Based.
All childcare providers registered with Ofsted must meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and have had Disclosure and Barring Service check.
Home Based
Childminder
A registered childminder looks after your child along with other children, usually in their own home.
They are allowed to care for up to six children under the age of eight, including their own child – but only three of them can be aged under five.
Most are willing to work early mornings, evenings and weekends, as well as part-time.
Group Based
Day nurseries
A day nursery provides childcare for 0-5 year olds and opens 8am to 6pm for approximately 50 weeks a year. They provide day care and education for children in age related groups. Charges vary depending on the setting and the age of the child.
Pre-schools or playgroups
Pre-schools or playgroups give care and early education for children between two and five years old.
They tend to offer sessions from three hours, during term time, either every day or on several days a week.
Nursery classes
The majority of primary schools have nursery provision where children can be admitted part-time the term following their third birthday.
Schools traditionally offer five morning or afternoon sessions. Many school nurseries now offer the 30 hours extended Early Years Free Entitlement.
Out of School and Holiday Clubs
Provided either by schools on a school site or private providers either at the school or in alternative premises with a drop off or pick up service provided by the school.
Depending on the hours you work, you can opt for a combination of:
- Breakfast clubs (normally open from 8am)
- After-school clubs (typically from 3.30pm to 6pm)
- Holiday clubs (8am to 6pm), which run outside of term time
